Hiring a web designer in Singapore without asking the right questions is how you end up with a website you can't update, a developer who's stopped responding, and costs that keep climbing.
Before you sign anything or pay a deposit, check these three things.
1. Who Owns the Domain?
This is the most important question — and the one most business owners forget to ask.
Your domain name is your business identity on the web. If your web designer or agency registers it in their name (which is common in Singapore's agency market), they control it. If the relationship goes sour, they can hold your domain hostage. You'd have to start from scratch with a new domain — losing your Google rankings, your backlinks, and your customers' ability to find you.
The right answer: "The domain is registered in your name at [specific registrar]. Here's your login."
The wrong answer: vagueness, "we handle all that for you", or any arrangement where you can't see and access your own domain registration.
2. What Happens After Launch?
The build is only the beginning. Every website needs ongoing maintenance: hosting renewals, security patches, content updates, bug fixes. Ask specifically:
- Who manages hosting, and what does it cost per year?
- Are content updates included, or billed separately? At what rate?
- What's the process if something breaks at 9pm on a Saturday?
- What's the exit process if I want to move to a different provider?
A developer who can't answer these questions clearly is a developer who hasn't thought through the post-launch relationship. That usually means you're heading for frustration.
The right answer: specific, written answers to all of the above.
The wrong answer: "don't worry, we'll take care of it" without specifics.
3. Can You See Live Examples?
Every Singapore web designer will show you a portfolio. The question is: are those websites actually live, findable on Google, and working on mobile right now?
Open three examples from their portfolio on your phone. Does each one:
- Load in under 3 seconds?
- Display correctly on mobile?
- Appear in Google results when you search for the business name?
A designer who shows you live, functional, searchable examples of their work is demonstrating competence. A designer who shows you screenshots or examples that are now offline is demonstrating a pattern.
The Honest Alternative
These questions exist because the Singapore web design market has a reliability problem. The questions above protect you from the most common failure modes: domain ownership disputes, disappearing developers, and hidden ongoing costs.
